Behind the Line

Back to the video board

You're in the front row of the left-field seats with your glove. Twenty fly balls come out. Catch the ones that clear the yellow line on top of the wall: souvenirs. Reach over the line and touch a ball that's still in play, and that's fan interference: a strike. Three strikes and security walks you out.

The short version of the rule: a spectator who reaches out of the stands and over the field, goes onto the field, or throws something that hinders a play on a live ball has interfered. The ball is dead and the umpires award what they judge would have happened. A fielder who reaches into the stands does so at his own risk. Six plays: you're the umpire.
